“Fathers [and mothers], don’t exasperate your children by coming down hard on them. Take them by the hand and lead them in the way of the Master.” -Ephesians 6:4 The Message
The goal of discipline is to build godly character.
Raising children without proper discipline is setting them up for failure.
It is important for parents to take time and develop a Discipline Plan. Rather than be overcome by anger and frustration during moments that merit correction, a plan will help you stay focused on developing character in your children.
As any parent, my husband and I dealt with issues of disobedience and sibling rivalry when our daughters were young. Correcting those issues at an early age paid high dividends. Our daughters today are best friends!
Our children will mess up, just as we adults do. They will make mistakes. It is our job to gracefully and intentionally discipline them in a constructive manner that will shape a God-honoring character.
Will we mess up in our discipline? Yes. As humans we are flawed and our humanity will show up. A sincere apology goes a long way to mend the relationship with our children and start fresh.
